UFC Fight Night Costa Vs. Vettori: Live Results And Analysis

LAS VEGAS – One of the most exciting weeks of 2021 comes to an end tonight, as Paulo Costa takes on Marvin Vettori in a light heavyweight bout at UFC Fight Night inside Apex.

This fight, of course, is supposed to come in at 185 pounds and have a big impact on the middleweight division. Instead, it turned into a confusing sequence of events, as Costa (13-1) essentially said he had no intention of losing weight.

Vettori (17-4-1) eventually accepts a light heavyweight bout – and 20% of Costa’s purse.

Regardless of the changes, this main event looks like an entertainment event on paper. And that’s important to both fighters, as each boxer lost to defending middleweight champion Israel Adesanya in their most recent performance.

Fighting:

Light Heavyweight: Nicolae Negumereanu (10-1, 1-1 UFC; -230) compared to Ike Villanueva (18-12, 1-3 UFC; +190)


Average grade: Gregory Rodrigues (11-3, 2-0 UFC) define. Junyong Park (13-5, 3-2 UFC) by second round knockout (to punch)

This 185-pound competition turned into an absolute race in the second lap, and in the end, Rodrigues was the last man standing.

Early in the second half, Park missed Rodrigues with a left hook and dribbled fiercely after the finish. Rodrigues ended up doing a knockdown to slow things down, and tried to get Park to the ground twice, but couldn’t get him under control each time.

When Park was stable again, he came back immediately to take the punches. It looked like he had severely injured Rodrigues in front of the fence but Park may have become too careless with his shots, and Rodrigues responded with a massive synergies to assist him. As Park retreated, Rodrigues hit him again with punches and eventually landed cleanly to end the fight at the 3:13 mark of goal.

A former contestant on the Dana White Contenders Series, Rodrigues has now racked up four straight wins since appearing on the show in September 2020.

Light: Mason Jones (11-1.1 NC; 1-1, 1 NC UFC) define. David Onama (8-1, 0-1 UFC) by unanimous decision

Jones had been expecting this to be his chance to finish the job he started in June, when he controlled a match against Alan Patrick before an accidental eye poke resulted in no contest. They were scheduled for a rematch, but Patrick withdrew earlier this week. Enter Onama, who is moving into the weight division for his short-lived UFC debut.

Jones, 26 and from Wales, succeeded in claiming his first win in the Octagon, as all three referees scored the match 29-28 in his favor, but it wasn’t easy. easy. He took eight knockdowns and over 100 hits, but from start to finish Jones got all he could handle from Onama, a 27-year-old Ugandan who was fighting in Kansas City, undefeated person. Nonstop grappling is the difference in a duel where every man has his stand-up moments.

Straw class: Tabatha Ricci (6-1, 1-1 UFC) define. Maria Oliveira (12-5, 0-1 UFC) by unanimous decision | Watch this fight on ESPN+

Ricci, of São Paulo, Brazil, covered the entire repertoire of her game in a raving 15 minutes in front of UFC rookie Oliveira. Ricci continued to make harder shots with his feet and prevailed against Oliveira in grappling exchanges on the floor. All three judges rewarded Ricci’s effort with a score of 30-27.

Oliveira did well by simply surviving three rounds. She escaped a wrist-worn effort in the second half, as well as a position completely tied by Ricci later in that inning. Oliveira unleashed heavy shots in the final inning, but was unsuccessful with any kind of comeback. Ricci makes it 1-1 at the UFC.

Middleweight: Jamie Pickett (12-6, 1-2 UFC) define. Laureano Staropoli (9-5, 3-3 UFC) by unanimous decision | Watch this fight on ESPN+

Staropoli overcame a major range disadvantage by closing the gap, time and time again, but with his main advantage nullified, Pickett went on to beat Staropol in a tug of war. Pickett finally hit back to long range in Round 3, and finished strong to secure his first UFC win after beating his first two in the Octagon.

The 33-year-old from Wilmington, North Carolina, received approval from all three judges, with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28. Staropoli, 28, from Argentina, has lost her fourth straight fight after winning her first two fights in the UFC.

Light: Jai Herbert (11-3, 1-2 UFC) define. Khama Worthy (16-9, 2-3 UFC) by first round TKO (to punch) | Watch this fight on ESPN+

Former Cage Warriors champion Herbert finally got his hands on a fight at the UFC Octagon, and he did just that with an early result at Worthy. TKO came at 2:47 of the opening round, after Herbert rocked Worthy with a right-hand and head-kick, before eventually knocking him out with further hits on the ground. Nine of Hebert’s 11 career wins have now come by knockout.

British lightweight is 0-2 in the UFC in this bout; however, both losses came against veteran competition from Francisco Trinaldo and Renato Moicano.

After picking up seven wins in a row, Worthy has lost three teamfights in a row by KO or TKO.

Men’s Flyweight: Jeff Molina (10-2, 2-0 UFC) define. Daniel da Silva (11-2, 0-1 UFC; +140) by second round TKO (to punch) | Watch this fight on ESPN+

Molina defended multiple submission attempts throughout Round 1 while using the top position to punish da Silva with punches and elbows, then showed up in Round 2 and immediately crushed da Silva with right hand, followed by a carpet somersault in TKO at 46 seconds.

Molina, 24 years old from St. Louis, took his ninth straight win and second in a row to kick off his UFC career. Da Silva, a 25-year-old Brazilian, saw a three-win streak end on his Octagon debut.

Straw weight: Randa Markos (11-12-1, 7-10-1 UFC; +110) define. Livinha Souza (14-4, 3-3 UFC; -130) by unanimous decision | Watch this fight on ESPN+

Markos, who fights in Ontario, Canada, secured his first win in five fights – and is likely to keep his spot on the UFC roster – by knocking out Souza via scores of 30-27, 30 -27 and 29-28 of the jury.

Victory was not without adversity, as Markos was forced to fight off a deadly rear-shooting attempt from Souza in the opening round. However, Markos dodged a collision and won the fight with a powerful and powerful strike in the final round.

Victory goes to Markos, who has been fighting exclusively in the UFC since 2014.
